About us

We pride ourselves on maintaining that traditional country pub feeling.

Based in the heart of Maplehurst village in West Sussex, The White Horse offers open fires in the winter and a large garden with beautiful countryside views in the summer. We are a freehouse that regularly serves up to 5 real ales, from around the South East, as well as the local Maplehurst cider. Our well-kept ales and traditional country pub style has helped keep us in the Good Beer Guide for over 30 years.

Beth and Simon Johnson have been running the White Horse since 1982, and have always kept to the principle of a friendly pub, serving good beer and classic pub grub. In fact the homemade chilli, cooked from Beth's secret family recipe, has become something of a local phenomenon.

You don't need to book a table to come and eat with us unless you are in a large group. Children and dogs are welcome.

We regularly host events at the pub, including the regular Maplehurst Village Day, the local farmers market, the annual onion competition and frequent visits from local morris troupes. The best way to keep up to date with our events is to follow us on Facebook.

During the summer you can book one of our legendary BBQs with burgers and sausages from our local butcher in Partridge Green, grilled to perfection by Simon. You will also have full use of our marquee, just in case the British weather isn't at its best. To find out available dates, give us a call.

Convivial attractive traditional rural family pub. I can't speak too highly of its community feel. Outstanding real ales and ciders, and a basic but satisfying menu.

Real Country pub. Good beer and home cooked food. Menu is a bit limited, but it is all good.

Lovely country pub with friendly staff and excellent beer. There are generally at least 2 real ales available, always well kept. The food is basic but good and reasonably priced. In Summer one can sit in a large garden. In Winter there are log fires.

Arrived here mid cycle ride a bit early but the lovely landlords opened up early for us. Had a great value, very tasty sandwich and chips and a well kept pint of ale. Perfect refuelling stop.

Only popped in for a quick sandwich and drink during a lengthy walk, so it was not a long visit. However, the food was good, reasonably priced, and the staff made us feel welcome. A basic garden, but lovely views and the cheeky artwork in toilets made us chuckle. 😉 Will be visiting again!
