In the middle of the woods at the very end of Withybed Corner, having negotiated a few potholes on the way (after rain!), is a little haven called The Bell; or ’The Rat’, as that is what The Bell is known as in Walton on the Hill and the surrounding areas
You will be made very welcome by Gordon and Linda, the proprietors, or one of the friendly bar staff; offered a choice of real ales, lagers, wines or spirits and, if you feel peckish, there are the usual packeted snacks and from Wednesday to Sunday evenings: hot pies, pasties and sausage rolls. Warm your feet (and your dog!) by open log fires in winter, and relax by the pond in the beer garden in summer, soaking up the sun.
This unspoilt popular village pub is a rarity these days, boasting two small bars (remember public and saloon bars?) and no ‘gastro’ attachment - which is much appreciated by the local clientele.
If you time it right on a Sunday, Linda will ply you with delicious roast potatoes, while on Quiz Nights Linda prepares a choice of lovely home-made sandwiches.
Occasionally there is live music on a Sunday with bands, solos and duos covering Rock, blues, and 60s music.
The Bell, The Rat, call it what you will; but a visit is well worth the effort. Pop in for a pint and a chat with the bar staff or friendly ‘regulars’, sit and relax, and enjoy the past and the present merging.

The only real pub in the area, a public bar, a saloon bar, no children but dogs welcome. Open 4:00pm to 11:00pm Surrey Hills Shere Drop London Pride Brakspears ordinary tap and usually in good form! Bands back on occasionally, it's worthwhile keeping an eye out for the Curry evenings.
Really amazing place, hidden away from the main road, really friendly locals and staff. A very friendly terrier mix named Harriet was there who only has three legs, used to be named lucky is the rumor. Full of history, a former king met his girlfriend on the sly there, and soldiers during WW2 quenched their thirst. We walked from the train station and it was less than the 20 minutes Google maps said. Just don't talk about football!
I love this pub. It's located in the middle of the woods down a dirt track from Walton on the Hill. The beer is excellent.
Utterly unique, a pub captured in time, and always worth the effort of navigating the pot-holed lane. The beer's good too.
I get that the rule is no kids in the bar but everyone should be aware that it is an absolute ban and the kid can not even go in with you whilst you buy the drinks. I do not mean this as a negative but probably a great place to go if you want the world to return to the good old days.
