he Sugar Loaves is a 17th century, Grade 2 listed Inn. It has formerly been known as "Three Sugar Loaves" and "Railway Hotel" due to its proximity to Hollingbourne station.
A sugarloaf was the usual form in which refined sugar was produced and sold until the late 19th century. The three sugar loaves sign, much like the brass ball sign of a pawn brokers was the sign for a grocery shop. Which is what we believe was what one side of the building may have been used for when it was built in the 1600's.
Just had a great meal (27 January 2024) as part of a group - local bellringers. Really good traditional pub food, excellent chicken pie, good choice of beers. Friendly and efficient staff.
Popped in today all a bit on the spur of the moment as we were passing, for some lunch, thought it might be a bit too late, but very pleasantly surprised to be welcomed in... Lovely food, great service, nothing too much trouble... Lovely butterscotch sponge pudding , yum
Lunched here today with family. Staff so friendly. Good traditional pub food. Prepared and cooked perfectly. Couple of good proper cask ales on. Plenty of parking. Nice garden. Games available for kids/adults. Definitely be visiting again
I don’t usually leave reviews but we laughed when the food came out. The meat pudding was just about ok but the seasonal veg - carrots and parsnip were looked like they had been cremated, dug up and recooked, the mash was dry and the gravy had no real taste. I’d have been embarrassed to serve up such a poor quality meal and I’m no chef sorry. The food looks much better on the website.
Very sweet, dog friendly, traditional pub with very friendly staff and great typical pub food. Definitely worth a visit.
