Rebuilt in the early 1930's at 199 Stoke Newington Church St, right across the road from its original location, the Rose and Crown was designed for Truman's Brewery by the highly respected pub architect A.E. Sewell,
The Rose and Crown is a well-known local landmark that has been owned by the same family since 1986. Adjacent to the 13th century St. Mary's Church, and stands proudly overlooking Clissold Park and fashionable Stoke Newington Church Street, with its eclectic mix of boho shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.
Stoke Newington is home to some of the most quaint, independent and specialist bars and shops to be found anywhere in London.
I've been coming here since landlord Martin Harley was a young barman, and the floor wasn't covered in fake flagstones. The place keeps it's 1920's charm, but is being ruined by the reservation system. Let's keep it as a pub and not turn it into a restaurant. I don't like being turfed of a table in favour of diners. Note - I'd like to say you have a great barman in Dan - polite, engaging and actually tells you how much the round is rather than just chucking the card reader at you. He's doing all the work while the other two newer (never seen them before) young men are too busy talking to each other - no manners and borderline rude. An extra star for Dan!
We arrived on Friday afternoon to this grand old pub with an open fire warming the bar. Max welcomed us warmly and showed us to a very pleasant room. Warm and spotlessly clean. This accommodation did not disappoint. We enjoyed a drink in the bar buzzing with the excitement of Friday evening. Home made yoghurt and sourdough toast won me over amongst the delicious breakfast choices. Thankyou to Kate and her kind and helpful team . We will return.
Overall have usually had a good experience here regarding atmosphere and service etc. Last Saturday my partner and I were sitting at an unreserved table (so we thought) early evening. We were thinking about ordering food a little later but a member of staff came over and plonked a reserved sign on the table without a word meaning we would have to be in our way in an hour. It would have been better if the sign had been put on the table earlier so we were clear from the beginning....
Had our Christmas party at the Rose & Crown and cannot speak highly enough of the staff and food! Very accommodating for a big group. Ian the manager was super helpful and generally great. Rest of the staff were also amazing. Food was delicious and really good portion sizes. Lovely time at a really lovely pub. We’ll be back next year!
This is a beautiful boozer. 4.75 stars. Would be the full five if they sold scampi fries and scratchings. A traditional pub, deceptively large. A beautiful real wood (and coal) fireplace, the likes of which you very rarely see east or north. Great beer selection and a proper Guinness, with authenticated plaque. Gets busy as the secrets out.
