Only an hour from London, yet in the heart of the Hampshire countryside, our authentic 17th century inn has a highly regarded reputation for serving top-quality cuisine.
Our restaurant has two AA rosettes thanks to the unmistakably British menu, which takes full advantage of our idyllic rural location — think fresh game, fabulous seafood and locally grown vegetables.
We are a great foodie destination in our own right, but we are also great for cosying up by the fire while enjoying a local ale or sharing a bottle of wine, or in finer weather there’s no better place to relax than our spacious garden (we have two outdoor dining areas). Weary travellers can then rest their heads in one of eight cottage-style guest rooms decorated with wonderful William Morris interiors.
Located in the North Wessex Downs, we are well placed to explore the stunning countryside by foot, bike or horse. Sporting enthusiasts can head to the Royal Berkshire Shooting School to brush up on their skills or try catching dinner on one of the local chalkstreams. And culture buffs won’t have far to go: Highclere Castle, setting for the TV drama Downton Abbey, is right on our doorstep.

Old pub with with a slightly modern look. The interior is broken into several comfortable spaces with log fires in winter. The food was a cut above the average, and very nicely presented. Best of all, the staff were really friendly and helpful, making it a very nice visit.
This is a lovely pub with rooms. We had a great stay. The room is small but clean and comfortable. The pub is lovely and quirky with some surprisingly great cocktails and good food. The staff are fantastic, nothing is too much effort and they try really hard to accommodate any request. Charlotte was amazing!
Beautiful setting, lovely food and the staff were super friendly and very helpful! All the seating had a really good distance from the next group and the canape was classy and had a nice atmosphere. The whole experience was very well run! Thank you, we will be back again! Also as a side note we loved that we were asked how we wanted our burgers cooked! We had two rare and one well-done and all were cooked perfectly!
We called today because we fancied a walk near Highclere Castle to soak up the bygone Downton Abbey Era and thought let's have a drink in The Pheasant on our return.. Well then we saw the menu and the beautiful interior and the welcoming staff so we booked a table and went for our walk.. on our return we were greeted with amazing smells coming from the kitchen, we settled in to our meal, the good lady had her usual Brandy and a minimal splash of Lemonade which so many establishments get it wrong but not here it was perfect 👌 we had a wonderful meal, venison pie absolutely super, so without continuing to write war and peace we fully recommend The Pheasant, so if your passing "stop!" call in and enjoy 😊👍
Warm welcome when we arrived. Very polite and knowledgeable staff about their food, drink and surrounding area. Room was clean, very comfortable bed and a lovely bathroom. Dinner was stunning. Couldn't recommend more to eat here. The decor is very countryside, smart and chic throughout the whole building. I highly recommend to stay/visit here. Have to book for meals as it becomes fully booked very quickly. Dog friendly also.
