In 1768, William Cookworthy made the first hard porcelain produced in England In Plymouth. The porcelain was made from china clay, hence our name The China House. The building was first seen in a 1666 watercolour of Sutton Harbour painted by Sir Bernard Gromme and has been used for a variety of purposes, including a gun wharf and a hospital for ailing mariners.

We visited for my husbands birthday, after not being back for years, and had a great experience & honestly wondered why it had taken us so long to return. Our welcome was friendly and our server Scarlet was wonderful throughout. Very personable, kind and helpful with any questions we had. She was probably the most polite waitress I’ve had in any restaurant in a long time which just made the whole experience so much better. Food was delicious and came quickly, we especially enjoyed our starters which was a lovely surprise as we were really there for the steak main. Apart from not having any fillet available (think they sold out), I could not fault the overall experience. The Camembert mash was life changing and will be the a returning favourite in the future! We were also pleasantly surprised by how busy it was for a Wednesday evening - really nice atmosphere and the building it’s in just speaks for itself. The set menu was a great way to have an affordable meal out which held a lot of options for all people with whatever food preferences or allergies they may have. We were also pleasantly surprised but how big the menu is overall and amount of options for people who may not opt for a traditional steak. Overall we left feeling very full, happy and are planning on returning very soon.
Anniversary meal, first time at miller and carter, steak was incredible! Had an issue with the chips being undercooked and our server Ella was so quick to resolve the issue and very attentive! Definitely recommend for a treat
We had a lovely meal here for our daughters 21st birthday. Pre lunch drinks in a nice relaxed area, then headed up stairs for our meal. We all had different steaks, and were all very satisfied with what we had. Staff all very pleasant, and Eva our server was nice. Thanks for a great meal.
The restaurant was beautiful and quiet, the food was absolutely amazing and you can see there was effort put in. The waiter we had, Eva, was really lovely and polite and even surprised us at the end with a little board with cream and strawberries as it was our 3 Year Anniversary. Thank you to the team for providing an amazing experience !
I was apprehensive about coming here as I am vegetarian, but my experience couldn’t have been more positive! The spinach and Camembert wellington was exceptional, and my partner thoroughly enjoyed his fillet steak too - we recommend both! The desserts were lovely and so was the ambience. We had such a lovely evening and would go back in a heartbeat.
