The John O'Gaunt Free House and Brewpub is a listed 16th century building which has been sympathetically restored, keeping many original features. It is steeped in charm and situated in the heart of the historic town of Hungerford.
As a free house we pride ourselves on our constantly changing selection of at least six real ales, many of them from local breweries and some brewed by us in our microbrewery here at the pub.
We also stock selection of at least four draft real ciders, including offerings from some of our local cider makers.
For those looking for more variety we have an array of other beers. In our bottled range we have, over 35 bottled beers from Belgium each with their own glass, more than 25 bottled, award winning craft ales from around the world, award winning Kenyan Tusker lager and a range of bottled beers from local breweries. On draught we always have Leffe Blond, and an ever changing selection from the likes of BrewDog, La Chouffe, Meantime, Camden and Siren Craft Ales.
Our food is seasonal, locally sourced, cooked with skill and passion, see our Menu page for a sample menu.
As part of the INNformal Pub Co. and Brewery we are forging the way in bringing back the core values of traditional pubs, serving great, sometimes unusual, often amazing ales, ciders and beers with a welcoming smile and a friendly informed chat, with some lovely food offerings, we are many people's idea of the perfect pub.

Excellent steak and ale pie - a proper pie ie shortcrust pastry top, sides and bottom. Lots of filling, very good chips, veg and tasty gravy. Crumble pudding and a sticky toffee pudding, again excellent. Lovely cosy atmosphere, cheerful staff. Definitely worth going to Hungerford just for this pub alone.
Excellent pub with an amazing variety of food and drinks! Lovely atmosphere and fire!
Excellent local food, well made and well presented, absolutely loved my meal, the staff were friendly and helpful, very glad we came, highly recommend.
What a gem of a place! Took pot luck when booked as we don't know the area at all. Lovely from the outside with all the pretty hanging baskets. Lovely inside too! Old fashioned, rustic charm and a little wonky! So genuine and unspoilt. Took ages to order because we just couldn't decide what to order. Such a range. Staff were chatty and helpful. Food was lovely and reasonably priced. Plan to go back again soon.
First time here, plenty of ales to try, I had the Golden ale, under 4% and very drinkable I didn't eat but everyone else's look and smelt lovely. Inside is very classy and the outside seating area is great, very bohemian. Definitely be back next time I'm in town.
