- Probably the oldest hostelry in Salisbury and certainly the most haunted - The Haunch of Venison provides refreshment in the historic downstairs bar and in the unique restaurant upstairs. The enormous oak beams, which can be seen throughout, pre-date the building by several hundred years and are thought to come from early sailing vessels. The Haunch of Venison is a «must see» place in Salisbury, listed on CAMRA's National Inventory for its historic interior and recommended by the Good Pub Guide for 28 years, has TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for three years, published in many guide books and other tourist publications. Also it proudly stands in a list of «25 Pubs in the UK you must drink in before you die». There is a tremendous heritage here, spanning back nearly 700 years – we would love you to be part of the future.
Wow! This place is the real deal. Proper old pub with hundreds of years of history... during which time either the floor has "slipped" or it was just built this way. Lots of interesting rooms and nooks and crannies. Food and drink measured up to the experience very nicely. Delicious Sunday roast with roast beef AND pork (why not?) and all the trimmings. If you get the choice of where to sit, sit downhill... that way if anyone uphill drops a roastie, it might roll down to you and you have a free spud! If you are a bishop, be careful on the tiled tap room floor. Apparently you can only move diagonally. I believe, like most bars of this vintage, there is an original bottle of Creme de Menthe still gathering dust on one of the upper shelves still only half drunk (rumours have it that the half that was missing had actually been spilled not drunk).
Went here for dinner on Christmas eve. Wonderful service, all the food was delicious. Drinks were great, and all of this in a beautiful, historic setting. Possibly my favourite pub in Salisbury!
Lived up to the hype. Very old original features, amazing staff, great service lovely food. Fitted us in at 6 pm. We luckily went in on Friday night, but they were full, so they squeezed us in for Saturday. I would book ahead if you don't want to be disappointed.
With the building dating from 1320, this haunted pub has to be included on a visit to Salisbury. A hotchpotch of small rooms, the pub and restaurant is an interesting enigma on where to sit. Nice selection of beers and spirits, and character in spadefulls. Friendly staff and very popular.
Having a casual lunch today at the 700 years old building. The Sunday Roast is so good especially the carrots coming on the side. The carrots are super sweet. Pork belly is crispy and tender. The Sticky Toffee Pudding is quite nice. It’s too sweet for my preference, but I finish it anyway. The staircase is steep and narrow. Kids and elders must be extra careful.
