About us

The Great Lyde pub has been at the heart of the East Yeovil community for many years. The Great Lyde is not only a pub but a social hub providing child-friendly events with bouncy castles, bingo and quiz nights, skittles, pool teams, live music and a delicious carvery on Sundays.

Mike has been the pub landlord for nearly eight years during which time he has invested over £100,000 of his own funds to make improvements which he did solely without support from relevant parties.

During the Covid pandemic Mike did everything he could to support the local community providing a hot food delivery service using all the profits to provide free meals for NHS staff at Yeovil District Hospital. By the end of the pandemic Michael had donated over 3,000 meals.

The pub remains incredibly popular with local residents who are demanding that their pub be retained rather than sold to become an SEN school.

Commenting on the proposals, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Adam Dance said: 'Having visited the pub on several occasions recently I am convinced that the loss of the Great Lyde would deprive many local people of a much-loved facility in this part of Yeovil. I am very happy to support the provision of a SEN school in Yeovil but I do not think that the acquisiton of the Great Lyde provides the right site for this purpose. I don't think the building is suitable as it does not provide the space and environment which the children who would use it deserve.

I’ve never been here before, but have heard it has been less than desirable in the past. I’ve seen all the good reviews recently and thought we’d give it a go for Sunday carvery. I was not disappointed and can happily say I agree with all the good reviews! The food was brilliant for the price. Meat was lovely, potatoes nice and crispy, vegetables cooked to perfection. All very tasty and we ate loads. The service staff forgot to bring some drinks over, and one of our puddings, but she did say the till was broken so it had made things difficult for them to keep track of what was going where. And as soon as we asked, they brought it over immediately. All staff were super lovely, friendly and welcoming and apologised for any inconveniences and so it wasn’t really a big deal at all. Excellent customer service. Very happy over all and will definitely be coming back again. Especially as my little boy fell in love with Chester the pub bulldog and has insisted that we see him again!

We arrived very late for the carvery and there was still lots of meat and a large variety perfectly cooked vegetables on offer. The staff were friendly and engaging. A very relaxed atmosphere and a fantastic carvery, very impressed.

Went there for a Sunday carvery. Excellent food and great service. The meal was reasonably priced with a choice of large, medium, or small size portions. We will certainly be going back again and I also noticed that they offer a take away service which we might well take advantage of at some time. I can definitely recommend the Great Lyde for a superb Sunday lunch.

Thoroughly enjoyed a Sunday Roast at The Great Lyde. A good selection of vegetables, including peas which you never normally get at a carvery, delicious turkey, cauliflower cheese and crisp but fluffy roast potatoes. The Biscoff Cheesecake was outstanding! The staff were super friendly, very polite and attentive and the place was nice and clean. A great family local pub, with lovely food which is good value for money.

The roast was absolutely amazing, with a nice selection of meats and vegetables. The potatoes could have been a bit more crispy but staff and atmosphere was lovely.
