The George is a relaxed pub & smokehouse with comfortable leather sofas, real ales and outstanding food, situated in the historic market town of Chichester.
Dating back to the early 18th century, The George stands next to the site of the original north walls gatehouse and is conveniently located just 500 yards from the Old Town Cross and Cathedral.
Offering good locally sourced food, a calm and efficient approach to service, The George situates you in an ideal spot from which to discover the West Sussex coast and countryside and is only a five-minute drive from Goodwood racecourse.
The busy bar has the warm, friendly atmosphere of a ‘proper’ pub. There are open fires, numerous ales on hand pump and a carefully curated wine by the glass.
Our back bar boasts a great range of spirits, with 24 speciality gins. The open log fire warms and welcomes in the winter months and the decking garden beckons in the summer.
We give our own unique British take on the delicious style of smoking meat and cooking it in our imported American smoker.
Diners enjoy the light and airy space of the conservatory, which has large double doors that open out onto the decked courtyard for alfresco dining in the warmer months. Dishes are prepared passionately and imaginatively by the head chef and his dedicated team.
Weekends at The George comprise of our hearty breakfasts and our now ‘legendary’ Sunday Roasts.
Booking is recommended in either our conservatory dining room or bar area, however the same menu is available in the Bar (and in good weather on the sun decking garden).
We don’t have a children’s menu, but our chefs are happy to make smaller portions or simplified versions of dishes on our menu.
Dogs are welcome in the bar area but are not allowed in the inside dining areas (with the exception of guide dogs.).

Very dissapionted in the room. The decor was dated and not maintained very well. The bathroom had chewing gum on the floor. The walls in the bedroom appeared to have mould or a water leak at some time. The plant water in the window was green and hadn't been changed in ages. The room just needs a fresh lick of paint to brighten it up. One positive the sheets were clean and the staff very polite. Unfortunately we didn't complain but should of. We did ring round that night to try and get a room anywhere closer to Purchases restaurant unfortunately it was the weekend before christmas and everwhere was fully booked. Such a shame regarding the room.
Rooms are a little dated. A freshen up is needed, but they are recently under new management. Breakfast was great, it's now a cooked breakfast, I wasn't expecting that.
Food and service fabulous.. but rooms, the only decent thing was the shower, rooms dated bed dated and uncomfortable spring mattress pillows flat as pancakes and no blackout curtains so as soon as the sun rises at 6 you'll be getting up,provided you actually got any sleep in those beds, and despite an apparent free Internet was unable to get online even when apparently logged in.
Nice enough pub but the photos speak for themselves for the room sold as a Deluxe Double. Leaks and damp and mould in so called en-suite where the damp meant the door would not shut. Old, neglected and outdated room. Underbed used for storage of an old tv and an old mattress. Staff good, food good, but don’t stay there.
A big thank you to the staff ,rooms out back are a little tight and could do with a refresh but far outweighed by the friendly can do attitude of everyone working there. Assumed breakfast was a continental low key affair and was presently surprised by FULL on breakfast menu ,added to by a try out omelet, cooked with any add ons .the breakfast staff were beyond their pay grade ,producing a quality experience .
