A COUNTRY INN

AT THE HEART OF

THE NORTH YORK MOORS

Dated back to 1555, The Fox & Hounds at Ainthorpe is a traditional country inn set in the heart of the North York Moors. Offering 10 comfortable en-suite bedrooms, a popular bar and restaurant with spacious outdoor seating, as well as doorstep access to local footpaths, national trails, bridleways and cycle routes, The Fox & Hounds is the ideal destination for your visit to one of the UK’s most stunning National Parks.

Located less than 1 mile away from the North York Moors Visitor Centre and 2 miles from the Yorkshire Cycle Hub, our historic inn is conveniently situated for visitors wishing to explore on two feet or two wheels. The pretty fishing villages of Yorkshire’s heritage coast are less than 20 minutes away by car and a railway station in adjoining Danby offers visitors easy access to the moorland villages along the Esk Valley and the busy seaside town of Whitby.

Onsite drying facilities and secure cycle store make us a welcome stopover for travellers tackling long distance routes such as Wainwright’s Coast-to-Coast or the Cleveland Way National Trail. We can provide a pick-up and drop-off service for smaller groups, as well as an early breakfast option and pack-up lunch for your onward journey.

An accredited Dark Skies Friendly site, at The Fox & Hounds you can make more out of your stay and enjoy breath-taking scenery at night as well as day. Night torches, binoculars and sky maps are all available for guests to use.

Our licensed bar serves a range of traditional cask conditioned Yorkshire real ale, continental lagers and selected quality wines, many of which are available by the glass. We work with local suppliers to provide freshly prepared food for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the week. Our delicious homecooked Roast Dinners are available every Sunday lunch – please book to avoid disappointment.

We are dog friendly.

A lovely country pub. The food was excellent and the spinach and mushroom lasagne was the best I have ever had with a fresh salad and chips. A fire burning made it even better. Good service and well worth the little detour to find it.

A great, quiet little country pub. Proper homemade food. I had a superb mushroom lasagne with great chunky chips and a well dressed salad. Everyone in our family thoroughly enjoyed their choices. I can hghly recommend it, you won't be disappointed.

Last day of our holiday and went to this fantastic traditional pub, great food and service. Everyone was really friendly and welcoming - we even joined in the Friday night quiz. Definitely recommend a visit, we will certainly be going back.

Such a wonderful country pub, we arrived at 12 noon, greeted with a smile. Food was absolutely amazing, we went for scampi and chips. Glad we did as it was very tasty and delivered extremely quickly. It’s was a lovely day so we made good use of the beautiful beer garden. The inside was really nice and extremely clean. We fell upon this magical place just by chance bunt glad we did. We will got again when we’re visiting Whitby.

Well situated for a detour from the cliff top path between Sandsend and Runswick Bay. Also a great cycle stop with cycle rack in the beer garden - so bonus points for that. Great little garden sheltered by low hedges but still afford views back towards Lythe and Sandsend. Beer was Timothy Taylor when we were there but their pale ale is a decent pint so enjoyed that. Staff very attentive and good food as well - so plenty of reasons to divert from the path.
