The Bird is a substantial old building dating back to the late 19th century. It was originally a Groves & Whitnall’s house called the Bird in Hand, and one of the original stained glass windows survives to testify to that name.
In late 2016 it was refurbished and the ground floor rooms have been opened up. The Games Room or vault has moved upstairs to the first floor where a very fine hammerbeam roof can be admired (along with a very similar function room). The ground floor lounge now has more of an emphasis on food, with an open kitchen that focuses on Italian food and particularly pizzas. There is a beer garden behind the pub, along with a sizeable smoking area (not strictly a shelter as there is no proper roof to it).
A small part of the extensive car park has been converted to become an outdoor drinking area at the front of the pub.
Food service: 9-12 for breakfast; 12-3 for lunch; 3-9 for pizza (baked before your very eyes).

Christmas meal was Delicious very tasty as was everything. Mince pies we Fabulous.
Today 25th went in for lunch. Bar staff welcoming and pleasant however food was not very good. My husband had chicken wings which were ok. I had steak melt. The steak was mostly grissle which was most of the steak. A very thin layer of cheese two small pieces of baby gem lettuce which was limp. Chips were good. I was asked by the person behind the bar when I went to pay was my food ok. I told her about the steak and was met with a sorry. Won’t be eating here again. Shame because it looks an improvement inside.
Food was ok but not value for money , this pub used to draw people in with fresh pizza years ago . There’s no draw anymore no different from any other pub in the area , we feel you don’t get enough food for your money . Shame really as we used to come here a lot . On the positive side staff are great
Went in as it had just been done up. Not the most welcoming atmosphere with heavy rock music playing. Food was OK, they had ran out of something but politely rectified it however my medley of green veg was a bowl of peas! The wine was dearer at the bar than on the new menu? No refund given the menu was just removed. Overall a pleasant visit but won't be rushing back.
Seemed like a lovely local family pub. I visited with a friend for lunch and even though we were 2 of 10 people it took over 30 mins for 2 sandwiches. The food quality was to be expected, nothing to write home about. The slow service did let this place down imo
