About us

Reputedly over 450 years of age and originally a Seamen’s Mission, the Anchor Inn is a charming and iconic inn situated adjacent to and overlooking the quaint little harbour in picturesque Cockwood.

The pub’s interior is just as wonderful as its exterior and features old settles, timber panelling, low beams, snugs and an impressive display of old nautical memorabilia. The Anchor’s award-winning seafood menu is famous for its mussels which are a genuine speciality (there are probably more mussels in the Anchor at any one time than there is in the nearby River Exe).

In addition to its range of fresh seafood which includes sublime scallops and perfect platters, the Anchor also offers a varied menu to suit all tastes, alongside a great range of draught beers including hand-pulled real ales and local ciders. As you would expect the fish pie is probably the best around but the steak and ale pie is also to die for – Scott and his team really do know how to produce delicious, mouth-watering food.

Why not enjoy an evening sitting outside watching the Cockwood swans whilst soaking up the last of the setting sun? Or on colder nights take a seat inside and enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere that this beautiful pub offers.

A lovely traditional English pub with great period dekor inside. The adjacent harbour is a great place when dry to sit out and admire the views.

We went to The Anchor Inn for dinner. This place is dog friendly which is a bonus. The staff are friendly and helpful! What a lovely pub. The interior is fascinating. Everywhere you look it’s something related to fishing, boats and the sea. What a wonderful meal we had. The mains were both so tasty. The banoffee pudding was so tasty. If you are in the area I would recommend visiting this pub for food.

We were recommended this place as serving the best mussels. They weren’t wrong as they were the best I have ever had. There was a choice of about six different mussel dishes which was a treat. I had them as a starter and you get a really generous portion. A lovely traditional old pub with beams. Really big inside with a section you can take dogs. The waiting staff were all lovely.

What a superb country pub. A proper old-school landlord who looks after the Cask ale so it is well kept - 4/5 kegs available when we visited. The landlord welcomes the customers in. Very friendly staff. Clean. Food looked excellent but a bit expensive for my pocket although we visited for drinks 5 times during our stay. Don't let that put you off - if you can afford to go it looks well worth a try - I wish I could have afforded to eat here. The eating tables seemed booked up most nights we visited. Lovely outdoor seating area looking over the harbour. I would recommend.

I highly recommend The Anchor Inn, it's a lovely old building and the food was excellent. I really enjoyed the Moroccan mussels. The waiting staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the building has a cracking atmosphere. If I lived locally this would definitely be a regular place to visit
